What is Google Search Console?

Google Search Console is a free tool or application that allows you to monitor various aspects of your website such as:

Isn’t Google Analytics the same thing?

Think of Search Console as a tool to check the health of your website.

Use both tools to build a better site

As you can see, both tools can help you build and maintain a healthy, robust site, but in different ways. Google Analytics shows you information about your visitors, but Google Search Console will show you more accurate information about your traffic and how they found you.

How does Search Console do this? The tool tracks search terms used to trigger your site to show in search engine results pages (SERPs). The Console also helps you see:

  • how many times your site was shown in search results (aka, impressions);
  • how many clicks you racked up from those impressions;
  • the rankings of those clicks on the SERPs that display exactly how your site ranks for specific keywords;
  • the click through rate (CTR) which tells you how many people are clicking on the search result and ending up at your site.
